Architect Alumni Visits Our DT Department

This term in Design and Technology students are studying modern architecture. We have looked at a variety of architects and discussed the timeline of design and the features of buildings designed in  the 20th/21st Century.  We have researched architects such as Ian Simpson who designed the Beetham Tower in Manchester and Zaha Hadid who uses bio mimicry as inspiration for her work.

As part of our work we have been looking at The Villa Savoye designed by Le Corbusier in the early 1930 in Paris. We have produced orthographic drawings of the building and considered how it could be built with renewable materials if we were to build a similar structure today.

We have also been modelling in card to learn scale and to use traditional architectural drawing equipment. One of our alumni from the school came to work with us. Malcolm Maginn designed the Hotel Football in Trafford that is owned by Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville. He worked in the industry for over 40 years and inspired our Year 9 students to follow in his footsteps.

Malcom brought in his drawing work to show us that he produced at University in the 1960s. He had drawn a building by Le Corbusier in Marseilles in France.

We hope Malcolm will come back to see our models when they are finished.
