Following the success of Manchester’s Make Your Mark vote 2018, our school council communication team attended the Manchester Youth Council’s ‘Big Day Out’ event at Manchester Central Library. The event was well attended by several other schools as well as members of Manchester Youth Council, British Youth Council and staff from Manchester City Council.
Young people reviewed both local and national Make your Mark results and gave their feedback, thinking about what action they would like to see taken in Manchester and their local communities. There was particular focus on campaigning, raising awareness and ensuring the voice of young people gets to those in power. Some students took a step outside their comfort zone and delivered a short presentation to the room; their nerves held steady and they received a round of applause for their input.
The Burnage students returned to school full of ideas and inspiration. They are hoping to get some action teams started and will need volunteers from the school community to support them. Some are even planning to apply for membership to the Manchester Youth Council. Perhaps one day, they will make it to the House of Commons!
