Safeguarding Young Carers @ BAfB

BAfB Young CarersA young carer is a person under 18 who provides or intends to provide care for another person.

Often, these children are caring for relatives without their teachers' knowledge, slipping through the net, undetected by support services.

The caring role they carry out means they have unique experiences and demands that impact on their capacity to enjoy and achieve at school.

Manchester Targeted Youth Services are working with the Children’s Society under the instruction of Manchester City Council to introduce the Young Carers Award to every high school in Manchester.

This will enable schools to independently support young carers and build on pre-existing support/pastoral structures.

At Burnage Academy for Boys we use the following assessment tools (Becker Tools) to assess young carers:

  • A MACA assessment tool is a questionnaire (an 18-item self-report measure) that can be used to provide an index of the total amount of caring activity undertaken by the young person, as well as six subscale scores for domestic tasks, household management, personal care, emotional care, sibling care, and financial/practical care.
  • A PANOC assessment tool is a questionnaire (20-item self-report measure) that can be used to provide an index of positive and negative outcomes of caring.

Thereafter, based on the information collated, a referral may be made to Manchester Targeted Youth Services who offer a range of services to young carers from advocacy to support moving into employment, education and training. The young carer or their carer/parent may also be sign posted to other services (dependent upon the identified need).

The lead professional for young carers at BAfB is Ali Shah.

The work Manchester Targeted Youth Services do compliments the work that is already done at Burnage Academy for Boys to safeguard children and families.
