At Burnage Academy we aim to develop skilful young scientists who not only understand the big ideas of science but can relate these to the world around them and apply their knowledge and understanding to new and unfamiliar situations. We encourage and support the boys to be the best that they can be in a safe and purposeful learning environment. The boys will explore the exciting world of science with highly practical, interactive and differentiated lessons. These lessons will allow the boys to develop an understanding of science and how theories and ideas can change and develop over time.
KEY STAGE 3
Year 7/8 – The boys will study the KS3 National Curriculum content. Teachers will focus on ensuring lessons are enjoyable, interactive and highly practical. Lessons are structured in a manner that allows students to see how their studies fit in with the real world and their potential future occupation. Students will be assessed using regularly through both formative and summative assessment methods, giving plenty of opportunity for students to provide evidence of the progress that they are making.
Year 9 – The boys will look to consolidate their understanding and revisit the big scientific ideas from the KS3 curriculum, often in greater depth. Boys will take a practical approach to their learning; this will involve completing a lot of project based learning targeted at developing scientific skills and understanding.
KEY STAGE 4
Year 10 Double Science (Exam board - OCR) – Boys in year 10 will study Core Science in year 10, before moving on to study Additional Science in year 11. During the year they will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics modules, as well as sitting a Controlled Assessment.
The boys will study the following units:
Biology 1 - Understanding organisms
Chemistry 1 - Carbon Chemistry
Physics 1 - Energy for the home
Biology 2 - Understanding our environment
Chemistry 2 – Chemical resources
Physics 2 – Living for the future (energy resources)
Year 10 Triple Science (Exam board - OCR) – Across year 10 and 11 boys will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They will have separate teachers for each subject. During the year they will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics modules, as well as sitting a Controlled Assessment for each.
The boys will study the same modules as those studying Double Science but due to having more time allocated for their Science lessons will also sit the following modules in addition to those listed for Double Science:
Biology 3 - Living and growing
Chemistry 3 - Chemical economics
Physics 3 - Forces for transport
Year 10 Science BTEC Level 2 (Exam board - Edexcel) – The boys will spend two years producing an evidence portfolio for in order to attain their BTEC Level 2. There are no final exams and the final grade is entirely based on the portfolio work produced.
Year 10 Entry level (Exam board - OCR) - The boys will spend two years producing an evidence portfolio in order to attain their Entry Level Science qualification. There are no final exams and the final grade is entirely based on the portfolio work produced.
Year 11 Double Science (Exam board - Edexcel) – The majority of boys in Year 11 will study the Additional Science modules in year 11. During the year they will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as sitting a Controlled Assessment.
The boys will study the following units:
Biology 2 – The components of life
Chemistry 2 - Discovering Chemistry
Physics 2 – Physics for your future
Year 11 Triple Science (Exam board - Edexcel) - Boys taking triple science in year 11 will finish studying the Additional Science modules before moving on to study the Extension Science modules in year 11. During the year they will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as sitting a Controlled Assessment for each subject.
In addition to the Additional units mentioned for Double Science, the boys will study the following units:
Biology 3 – Using Biology
Chemistry 3 – Chemistry in action
Physics 3 – Application of Physics
Year 11 Single Science (Exam board - Edexcel) – A few boys will only be sitting Core Science so will continue to study the modules they began in year 10.
